The Fun of Fostering

Zeke-former HTH foster, recently adopted through the hard work of Grateful Dogs Rescue!Over the last few years, my husband and I have had the pleasure of fostering dogs for several Bay Area rescue groups. Old dogs, deaf dogs, black dogs, big and little there is a rescue group out there for every type and breed of dog. I will admit that there have been a few dogs that I really wanted to keep as my own, but in doing that I would be limiting being able to help out more dogs in need. When one fosters a dog you have to have realistic expectations in mind. A dog may stay with you for a few days or weeks or in some cases months or even years. You give everything to that dog that you would your own; always knowing that one day that dog will find its forever home. That can be the hardest and the most rewarding experience of all.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned is from Sherri Franklin, founder of Muttville is that every dog deserves a happy ending. Muttville specializes in rescuing senior dogs. Some of our fostering has been hospice cases. Sasha was our first. Found in San Francisco SPCA it was obvious that Sasha did not have a lot of time left. I agreed to take care of Sasha for whatever time she had left. Sasha died a very happy and loved dog, possibly for the first time in her life. I will always remember Sasha. Taking care of her was a true gift to us both.
There are always the goofy puppies, the happy Goldens, every type of dog can wind up in shelters or rescues for any number of reasons. Please consider helping out a dog in need. If you cannot foster, shelters and rescue groups are always looking for volunteers and donations. Please help out any way you can, you will never regret it.
